Secretary-General releases report on special measures for protection from sexual exploitation and abuse
March 9, 2017: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has released a new report on 'Special measures for protection from sexual exploitation and abuse: a new approach'. The annual report was repurposed this year to include the new approach proposed by the Secretary-General's Task Force on the UN response to sexual exploitation and abuse, convened by Jane Holl Lute.
The report details "the Secretary-General's strategy to improve the Organization's system-wide approach to preventing and responding to sexual exploitation and abuse. The strategy focuses on four main areas of action: putting victims first; ending impunity; engaging civil society and external partners; and improving strategic communications for education and transparency." Finally, the report also includes data on allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse across the UN system, including by non-UN international forces authorized by a Security Council mandate, from 1 January to 31 December 2016.
